CLASS IS FULL – Contact us to be placed on the waiting list

This is the entry-level English class for Sound Learning.narnia 1

This introductory composition course is based on the book Following Narnia Volume 1: The Lion’s Song by Laura Bettis. Students will learn to “think like good writers.” Writing instruction and exercises will be presented through lectures, lessons, and interactive activities. Students will write paragraphs and essays based on the first three novels in the Chronicles of Narnia series.  The student book includes source texts, consumable pages for outlines, and practice pages for adding style elements.

This class is a customized small group tutorial for improving students’ writing skills. The instructor will provide direct instruction on selected concepts in class. Each week, students will receive a lesson script and a checklist in addition to the Student Book. The script will give step-by-step instructions for successful completion of each lesson with helpful information not included in the Student Book. The checklists will specify format, content, structure, style, and conventions (punctuation, grammar, usage, etc.). The customized lessons and checklists will effectively guide parents to help their students at home.

Students will need to plan for 45-60 minutes of homework four days a week.  Parents must provide oversight for student’s daily progress on assignments, function as a parent-editor for all writing assignments, and facilitate discussion questions.

Writing will be evaluated and returned weekly in Google Classroom. Grades will also be updated
weekly on Google Classroom.  Students who do not have an 80% at the end of fall semester will
need instructor permission to continue into second semester. At spring break, students are required
to have an 80% or above to be guaranteed registration in an English class at Sound Learning for the
following year. Visit Sound Learning’s General Course Requirements for more information.
