Human Biology

Dr. Jennifer Floyd
9-12th grade

This high school-level science course will cover the structure and function of major organ systems and current health issues of the human body.  Students will demonstrate an understanding of the following:

1.     The structure of atoms and molecules, and the chemical reactions of biomolecules
2.     The structure of cells and the functions of organelles
3.     The function of the cell membrane
4.     The mechanisms of cell division
5.     The types of body tissues and their functions
6.     The structure and identification of bones and muscles
7.     The mechanics of body movement
8.     The structure and physiology of the brain and nervous system
9.     The anatomy and physiology of the heart, circulatory, and respiratory system
10.  The composition and function of blood and blood cells
11.  The anatomy and physiology of the digestive and urinary system
12.  The anatomy and physiology of the reproductive system

Students will learn to apply their knowledge in new contexts, including interpreting anatomical, physiological, and medical data.
Students will think critically about evaluating scientific literature and experiments within the disciplines of anatomy, physiology, and medicine.
