Logic

Grades 6th-12th grade
Shannon Beddo, Instructor

This is a class that teaches your children HOW to think, not WHAT to think.  The focus is on thinking without error in our thinking.

First Semester:Screen Shot 2015-03-09 at 4.25.56 PM
The first semester uses a homeschool favorite, “The Fallacy Detective.”  Your student will learn over two dozen logical fallacies and will be able to identify them on TV, the radio and around the dinner table.  This is a fun class that lends itself to object lessons which are often used in class for demonstration.  We finish “The Fallacy Detective” in 13 weeks, allowing 16 weeks for our second semester.
Second Semester:
With a firm foundation in informal fallacies, the second semester gets much meatier.  We will slow down a bit as we digest “The Art of Argument.”  This is a challenging text, but I’m confident your student will be able to build on what we have learned so far.  This semester includes a review of all fallacies learned first semester with more than a dozen more fallacies introduced.
Also included this semester (outside the scope of the textbook) is an introduction of formal logic in the form of “mini-lessons” presented by the instructor, no additional text needed.  This will help prepare them for the very challenging Formal Logic course offered in High School.

Expectations: Students will be expected to listen and take notes in class, participate, read the text, answer homework questions, and listen for fallacies to bring to class as examples.  Allow 1-2 hours for homework per week first semester and 2-3 hours a week second semester.
This is a graded class that uses quizzes, tests and homework to determine the grade.Screen Shot 2015-03-09 at 4.26.21 PM
