World Literature/Literary Analysis (Grade 10 and above)

This course focuses on ancient epics – grand stories about heroes, armies, gods, and forces of nature. These works will be studied within the context of history, genre, and worldview.  Students will be introduced to elements of the “Hero’s Journey,” literary devices, and thesis statement writing.

At the beginning of the year, students will be guided through selections from Literature World Masterpieces. Then excerpts from Richmond Lattimore’s translation of the Iliad and the full text of the Odyssey will prepare for Socratic seminar discussions that build critical thinking and discussion skills. Students will conclude the year by writing a literary analysis research paper.

Prerequisites:
Successful completion (80% or above) of Introduction to American and World Literature.

Required Materials
Literature World Masterpieces, Prentice Hall, 1996, ISBN 0-13-414624-7 (Textbook is provided for student loan.)
Students will need to purchase a print copy of The Odyssey translated by Richmond Lattimore. (Paperback, 2007 recommended)
