Denise Kowalski, Instructor
Course Overview: This is a challenging one year, two semester course. Algebra 2 provides a review and extension of the concepts taught in Algebra 1. Topics covered include operations with real numbers, systems of linear equations and inequalities, factoring, radicals, quadratic and higher functions. Additionally, there is work with conic sections, exponential functions, complex numbers, and logarithms. Real world application problems pepper the course. The course finishes with trigonometric functions and identities.
Students will use the interactive Pearson’s MyMathLab to master the material. This program uses eText, video, and multimedia learning aids. Class time will be spent on the big ideas and group projects. These reinforce the scheduled concept and develop camaraderie as students tackle higher math. Since the concepts are quite involved, the daily video mini lessons will be a huge help. This course is not for the faint of heart.
MyMathLab does not allow students to advance to the next topic until they have completed the assignment with at least 80% mastery. Students solve the problems and type in answers online. They then receive immediate feedback and are allowed 3 attempts to solve a problem correctly. When solving any problem the program allows them to review the video again, access the eText, or work through a similar problem step by step, returning to their original problem for another attempt. This helps the student gain mastery quickly. Students are given a daily assignment or test.
Student Expectations: Students are expected to participate in class as well as complete assignments, quizzes, and exams at home. Plan on spending 60-75 minutes/day outside of class, Tuesday-Friday, on Algebra. Daily progress will be monitored and Mrs. Kowalski requires DAILY math work. Marathon weekend sessions are unacceptable. Students are penalized for late assignments.
Parents need to do the following:
-Get their students to class on time.
-Provide oversight and encouragement for their student’s daily progress on assignments.
– Regularly monitor their student’s grades.
-Issue final letter grades. At the end of each semester, parents and students are given a summary of all scores on chapter exams, quizzes, homework, and participation in class.
Requirements and Readiness:
1. Students must have reliable internet service and a printer.
2. Students are ready for Algebra II if they have successfully completed Algebra 1 and Geometry, or equivalent, with a B or higher.
3. Students must complete the Algebra 2 Summer Packet with 70% or better before joining the class. Packets are due on the first day of class.
4. Students must have 60-75 minutes/day for math.
5. Visit Sound Learning’s general course requirements for more information.
